Neverland SE is the third release of Derron but the first international since his friend DJ ICE picked him up in LA by random. It symbolizes a giving back after Derron left his home Berlin Germany to live in states for almost one year. A German music culture clashes with the original feeling of the California Vibe. Every single track is a produced of that time. The opening song “Courage” is featured by the beautiful French African singer Victiore Laly which is smoothly touching the mood of the song with her French words.

The second single and title track, “Neverland” introduces the San Francisco newcomer artist Kazz Emceein, Mar B The Producer and Passionate, as well as Geez on the fourth deeply moving production “When it all falls down”. Between these to tracks the producer of Neverland appears as The Nonpareil D-Light to give Derron some backup by shouting a enormous thrilling chorus for “Digital World”. There are also European artist supporting Derron on Neverland. “Stell dir vor” is a soulful hip hop ballad introducing two of Germany’s finest soul ladies Jasmine Thomas and Kayna. To make the song more interesting it comes up in two different versions, one produced by Derron himself and the second by his producer Dennis Kuhn. The last song called “Gimme that” gives the EP the joyful kick and before you even realize it, you are still nodding your head while the last parts of the instrumental is running out.

The event covered a lot over two days, graffiti exhibition (featuring Cope 2), B-Boy battles (Harrisburg Breakers), MC's battles (GrindTime DMV), and capped off with the stars of the film, Writer & Director Charlie Ahern, performances by Grand Wizard Theodore, Double Trouble, Waterbed Kev & Master Rob the L' Bros (Fantastic 5) plus a bottle popping performance from the Host of the weekends events Chief Rocker Busy Bee alongside yours truly, DJ ICE.

The Jarritos Flavor City Art Contest: “Drink Out Loud” is looking for innovative Angelenos to describe what Jarritos means to you. We are looking for artists of all ages to develop eye-catching works of art in any medium to express the flavor and experience of Jarritos. Each art submission must incorporate the “Drink out Loud” slogan logo and at least one of the eleven Jarritos flavors. (fruit punch, grapefruit, guava, hibiscus, lime, mandarin, pineapple, strawberry, tamarind, mango, lemon-lime).

NBA Throwback: I Went To Camp With Dr. J

I have been blessed and always had my involvement in something. Here is a young ICE 8 years old, ready to take a lesson from the Doctor, Dr. J for short. I will never forget "I went to camp with Dr. J" was on the back of our program t-shirt. Damn, Wish I knew where my jersey is. In 1985, went on to take 3rd in the midwest region 9-12 NBA PEPSI HOTSHOT Contest and advanced to 3 round shoot out at halftime of a Kansas City Kings, Washington Bullets basketball game.

Kutmah was born in the UK to an Egyptian mother and Scottish father. He moved to the US with his
mother when he was 12 years old. They immediately applied for US residency to keep them from being sent to Egypt.
The US court ruled that as a British citizen he would be able to live in the UK and denied their application.

Kutmah and his Mom returned to court to plead their case 14 years ago when Kutmah was 20. They were again
denied a green card and were urged to sign a document stating they would voluntary leave the US.

On Wednesday morning, May 5th armed agents entered Kutmah's house and detained him. He was brought to a
facility in downtown LA where he was interrogated. On Thursday he was moved to New Mexico. We need to show
how important Kutmah is to the LA and US community. Please write a letter and spread the word!

"mighty fine, mighty fine" one of his famous quotes. We'll I am indebted to Mr. Brute Bailey, Thank you for your guidance and believing in me. He would call me "the Aficionado" cause he felt I knew Hip Hop. Not bad to have someone like Brute, who started the Fresh Fest w/ JD's father(So So Def) come to me and ask me who produced what on day to day or him asking me if I spoke to Teddy Ted or Special K on classic records like "Don't Curse" Heavy D, Tap The Bottle YBT, Brothahood Creed, JUICE Soundtrack, CB4, Houseparty 1 & 2, Strictly Business. I use to love to run and get the Subway sandwiches for Brute and Hank Shocklee or maybe ShaKim (Flavor Unit) walk in or Go and Get A.D. and I some food, ICE. No Problem. In the weeks after Hurricane Katrina, Coleman and B+ were invited to New Orleans to screen Brasilintime and to make photos by the folks from Common Ground. Documenting the damages and the obstacles people were faced with to rebuild what was lost. In five days they had made enough images to have a benefit show at Self Help Graphics in LA.

Three years later on Halloween Weekend of 2009, VTech invited Mochilla back to New Orleans again - to attend the Voodoo Festival and to meet with Jay Electronica - New Orleans favorite representative – well, besides the Saints!

Timeless describes moments outside of time— moments that exist so deep inside history that they break through that finite grid. Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series is an homage to the composer-arrangers that have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways.

The creative center of popular music today is the beatmaker-producer. Whether it is Timbaland, Dilla, Dre, or Madlib, these musicians have an uncanny sense for voicings, a penchant for unusual sounds and catchy rhythms and a magical ability to manufacture a good performance. Today’s beatmakers are the direct descendants of yesterday’s composer-arrangers. Their processes—whether it be writing a memorable line for background singers or finding the appropriate moment for a baritone harmonica — mirror those of today’s musicians. The composer-arranger creates music through the frame of the bigger picture, often more concerned with how things sound together than individually. Similarly today’s beatmakers produce music on a grand scale, but through automation and sampling.

Timeless brings these two seemingly unlike worlds together. The series honors the musical legacies of some of the greatest composer-arrangers ever. Timeless celebrates the work of the composer-arranger in the context it should be seen—with full orchestras.

From Mulatu Astatke to J. Dilla to Arthur Verocai, the Timeless Concert Series touched upon the works of three musical giants. Mochilla is proud to announce the March 30th, 2010 release date of the Timeless Concert Series, a 3 DVD box set with a special downloadable audio portion. The box set will be an extremely limited and numbered edition of 4,000, which will include full liner notes, a free poster exclusive only to the box set, extra features, songs, and slideshows of images used in the presentation. To mark the launch of the DVD, there will be a series of events scheduled around its release, including a SXSW screening. Stay tuned here to The Sounds of VTech for more.

Mulatu Astatke:

Headlining the first concert in the Timeless series was the beginning of a big year for Mulatu Astatke. His recent collaboration with the Heliocentrics has made it on many people’s “Best of List,” for 2009. The anthology of his work, New York-Addis-London: The Story of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975, the first comprehensive collection of his work was a big success for Strut Records. On February 1st, he blessed the Luckman Auditorium with an amazing show. He shared the stage with Los Angeles jazz scene veterans Bennie Maupin, Azar Lawrence, and Phil Ranelin. The performance is beautiful, showcasing many classics as well as some new material. The music was mixed by Los Angeles engineer Benjamin Tierney and UK producer/musician, Will “Quantic” Holland.

Mulatu is currently touring Europe with the Heliocentrics and is still talking about the Timeless concert.

Suite For Ma Dukes:

Timeless II celebrated the music of hip-hop producer, James “J. Dilla” Yancey. Composed and arranged for a 60-piece orchestra by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, the concert featured special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos (De La Soul), Talib Kweli, and more. This premiere performance is still buzzing in the minds of many, unable to shake the magic of that evening.

The music was mixed and mastered by legendary Grammy award-winning producer/mixer Bob Power. Power is the man behind hundreds of pop and jazz recordings. He’s worked with such artists as Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, India.Arie, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and even more significantly, with Dilla. Bob rarely works on smaller independent projects like this, but was so impressed with Miguel’s music that he blessed this collaboration with an epic mix.

We are premiering “Take Notice” today with Bob’s mix.

In related news, on February 6th, 2010, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony will be perform four of Miguel’s arrangements of Dilla in a tribute to great American composers. Dilla will be honored right along side George Gershwin, William Grant Still, and Duke Ellington. Only Timeless could have made this happen. Deepest congratulations to Miguel and Dilla.

Arthur Verocai:

Timeless III saw Arthur Verocai make his very first trip to Los Angeles to perform his seminal 1972 record for a capacity audience at the Luckman. The performance brought the crowd to a stand still. According to Verocai, “I never played the record, alive or dead!” and hid the record from his family because “of his disappointment at its failure during the 70s.” His utter delight at the opportunity to play this music in its complete form can be seen in the DVD. He has subsequently been offered an opportunity to do the concert again in London. Stay tuned.

The music was mixed by Verocai himself in Rio de Janeiro. He was so excited with the final result that he held a private screening of the concert at the beginning of December and invited the Carioca music community.

Three different shows with three different producers/arrangers and three different styles of extraordinary music presented. For those who attended, the Timeless Series was that of magic, love, and music that penetrated the soul. With the box set, those who weren’t able to attend will now understand what everyone has been talking about. And for those who have, a chance to relive music history all over again.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are a family, literally. They are the heirs to the great musical tradition of Chicago. Their father Phil Cohran trained them from aged three to play hard, fast and together. They boast a fan base as wide and eclectic as Barack Obama, David Byrne, Q-Tip, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Jools Holland and thousands more. Now with the news that they along with Mos Def and drummer extraordinaire Tony Allen will form the new Gorillaz outfit, you realize that this is no ordinary collective.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE), a band comprised of eight brothers, all sons of Sun Ra trumpeter and songwriter Phil Cohran, have been playing since they were three years of age and have inherited a lineage deeper than most bands will ever attain. Raised on the south side of Chicago, their musical heritage is rooted in their genes. They have brothers and sisters that are professional musicians, their mothers are singers and their father, Phil Cohran, a legendary visionary and teacher has music experiences from the 1940s in St. Louis to his seminal role with Sun Ra in Chicago in the 1950s.

As Sun Ra moved to the east coast in 1960, Cohran stayed behind in Chicago to be with his family. As his children grew, Cohran worked as a musical activist and educator, which led to the establishment of the Sun Ark in a warehouse behind their family home. At night while the children slept, they would hear their father rehearsing with his band the 'Circle of Sound.' At six in the morning, they were awoken to practice music for several hours before going to school. From an early age they were a central part of their father’s Youth Ensemble. At night they listened to NWA and Public Enemy, and Ice Cube and Eazy-E were their heroes.

By the end of the nineties, with everyone out of school, they concentrated on their music full time. With a mix of their jazz roots and their hip-hop sensibility, they made a living for themselves on the streets of Chicago. While performing on a subway platform, they stumbled upon their name when a man who watched them for hours, missing train after train, proclaimed that he has been "hypnotized" by their music. With their composer skills aiding them to create a sound wholly their own, the group moved to New York City where they played with Mos Def and Erykah Badu.

From a chance encounter in November of 2005, and support from numerous artists, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has released an album brimming with musical magic. Recorded on the back of the Africa Express trip to Lagos last October, during a three-day stop-over in London, with the drummer's stool shared by Malcolm Catto from the The Heliocentrics, Sola Akingbola from Jamiroquai, and the one and only Tony Allen, and other musical luminaries Flea and Paul Simenon, this album is all that is cracked up to be and more.

In May 2009, Blur and Gorillaz's frontman Damon Alburn's Honest Jon label dropped the Hypnotic's first official full length studio album to accolades the music world over. With the sound, form, and structure in their musicianship and songwriting, the HBE have the ability to put on live shows that would put veteran bands to shame.
